Medieval monasticism encompassed a wide variety of forms of life which called on men and women to renounce their worldly lives in favour of spiritual ones. Nevertheless, monks and nuns depended on outside help to survive. In turn, they exercised an enormous influence on society and culture that ran far beyond the walls of their monasteries.

In a series of classes founded on the discussion of original source material, Monasticism beyond the Monastery offers the chance to uncover a conversation between medieval monasticism and the outside world that still greatly impacts our lives today!
