CEDRR guest lecture "Political Networks: What Are They and How Do They Matter?"

Petr Ocelík (Department of International Relations and European Studies, Masaryk University) will deliver a lecture "Political Networks: What Are They and How Do They Matter?"

The study of networks in politics has been on the rise since the 1980s. There are many types of politically relevant relationships ranging from co-voting patterns in legislative bodies to interstate alliances to inter-organizational interactions among various policy actors and their joint articulations in public debates. Building on such examples, the lecture will illustrate how social network analysis, as a methodological and metatheoretical framework, contributes to a better understanding of the political world. The lecture will conclude with a reflection on how the network perspective on politics struggles to explain policy change.
