CEDRR talk: "Florentine Political Debates, 1349-1492. A Social and Semantic Analysis"

  • 30 November 2022
    10:00 AM – 12:00 PM
  • B2.12

The Florentine Consulte e Pratiche is the most consistent recorded series of speech-by-speech policy discussion held by the local political elite which embrace approximately one hundred and fifty years of Italian history. Starting from its outset in 1349, the meetings served as an advisory forum for the Florentine government chiefly in questions of diplomacy and taxation. The talk will address the ways in which these registers were produced by the Florentine chancellery, their language and the major topics covered by the discussions. It will also explain the archival work which provided the basis for two lengthy collaborative articles aimed at analysing the period of the War of the Eight Saints (1375-1378), a major diplomatic conflict between Pope Gregory XI and the Florentine political elite, its semantic and social networks.

Katalin Prajda is a postdoctoral research scholar at the Institut für Geschichte, Universität Wien. She studies the co-evolution of diplomacy, economy, society, and the visual arts in medieval and early Renaissance Italy.
